[2nd April 2007]

Earlier today, Wales became the second UK nation to commence a smoking ban aimed at reducing the risk of smoke related disease in the workplace.

There has been much debate about the right and wrongs of the ban but from today Welsh pubs and clubs will be smoke free zones.

The ban will soon be implemented in England (from July 07) but the Welsh seem to have embraced the changes and for the most part the ban has been very well received.

The ban is ultimately aimed at reducing the risk of smoking related disease particularly for those working in the leisure industry.

It will now be illegal for any place of work to allow smoking and the rules will be enforced by an army of council inspectors who will have the power to issue fines of up to £2500 for any business thought to be in breach of the regulations.

Anti smoking lobbyists have been pushing for the ban for a number of years and a following the success of the Irish Republic ban a few years ago, the idea of smoke free working environments took hold.
