[15th November 2007]

Two Network Rail workers have been arrested following a police investigation into the Cumbrian fatal train crash.

The two are thought to have been charged with manslaughter offences and were arrested by the British Transport Police.

The men live locally to where the crash happened and the arrests have come as something of a surprise to many.

A force spokesman said, "The 64-year-old man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries. The 60-year-old man is currently in custody."

One woman died and 89 injured when the London to Glasgow Pendolino express derailed in the Cumbrian countryside on the evening of February 23.

BTP has already arrested and bailed a 46-year-old man, also a Network Rail employee, from Preston.

The workers are members of the Rail Maritime and Transport Union which said it was "mystified" at the arrests. The union claimed that systematic management failings, lack of resources and the imposition of unrealistic workloads were at the heart of the tragedy.

It is thought that the crash will result in compensation claims  being pursued by the passengers.

It is rare for the police to single out low level workers in this way for alleged negligence in the workplace and the matter is likely to be subject to a much more in depth investigation. Network Rail have made no comment at this stage.
