accident
Injuries in the workplace caused
by equipment failure, shortage or lack of maintenance
Equipment is often provided by
your employer to make work more efficient, cost effective and profitable.
This could be by way of employing fork lift trucks, mechanised processes and
machinery or even office equipment.
The
Provision and Use of
Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply to all types of machinery,
apparatus, and tools that are used at work. The aim of these Regulations is

In brief the employer must ensure that
the work equipment provided is suitable for the purpose for which it is
provided. The equipment must also be efficiently maintained and if it is a
machine that its maintenance log is up to date.
The employer must also ensure that all
employees have had adequate health and safety information and training regarding
the use of the equipment. This should also include what should be done in
unusual circumstances and the action that should be taken when a dangerous
situation should arise.
If the machinery has dangerous and/or
moving parts then the employer must ensure that the employees are adequately
protected by the use of guards or other protective devices and information,
training and supervision.
If equipment such as power tools have
caused injury such as
vibration white finger you may be able to claim compensation.
Equipment where appropriate should
also have one or more easily accessible stop buttons and emergency stop buttons
which must be clearly identifiable.
NEWS
Equipment must also be suitably
stabilised and lit and marked with appropriate health and safety information and
warning signs.
