Suspect petrol - employers warn staff

[28th February 2007]

  • Employers react to the petrol crisis involving supermarket garage purchases - 28th February 2007

The rather bizarre defective petrol crisis that has hit the country has led employers to issue warnings to their staff about the correct way to report and handle any problems

Staff in some sectors have been advised to record when they fill up at certain stations and to retain the receipts. This is in case further action may be warranted against the supermarket chains (or their suppliers) allegedly involved.

The country has been gripped by the story all week. Whilst the companies involved and consumer groups decide what actually caused the numerous reported incidents of complete engine failure, employers have been advised to take care of the risks involved.

If an employee has an accident at work whilst behind the wheel and whilst driving a car the is suffering any defects, there may be liability on the employer. Staff have been asked to not drive any vehicles where the petrol defect is thought to be causing problems.
